2010 Turkey earthquake

The 2010 Turkey earthquake was a 5.9 Mw earthquake that occurred on 8 March 2010[1][2] at 02:32 UTC. The epicentre of the quake was Başyurt in Elâzığ province. According to global news channels, at least 57 people were killed. Another 100 or more have been hospitalised, many after falling and jumping from buildings during the quake.[2][3] A stampede through the streets led to further injuries.[4] The death toll is continuing to rise.[5]

Many people used vehicles and taxis to drive to hospital.[6] Most were asleep at the time the quake struck,[6] with four sleeping sisters perishing in one house.[7][8] Farm animals were also killed,[6] and minarets fell down.[7]

According to officials, most of the deaths occurred in three villages: Okçular, Yukarı Kanatlı and Kayalı.[2] At least five villages, though, suffered loss of life.[6][9] Villagers fled buildings, spending the night outside and lighting fires in the streets for warmth.[6]

The earthquake came one week to the day after the Turkish Chamber of Civil Engineers sent a report to parliament detailing inadequate building projects and the possibility that Istanbul would be destroyed by an earthquake, which could kill tens of thousands of people, at some point in the next three decades.[10]

My condolences towards the victims and to the Turkish nation.

Stirling Moss injured in lift accident

Stirling Moss is recovering in hospital from serious injuries he suffered in a lift accident at his home over the weekend.

The racing legend fell down three floors of a lift shaft following a malfunction with the lift doors – when they opened on the third floor while the lift was still a floor further up.

Moss broke both ankles and four bones in his feet, plus suffered further damage to his vertebrae, in the fall. Luckily he did not suffer any internal injuries.

Following the accident, Moss was admitted to the London Hospital and then later moved to the Princess Grace Hospital, following the intervention of Professor Sid Watkins. Doctors hope he can be moved out of intensive care later on Monday, and his life is not in danger.

Despite the severity of his injuries, his wife Lady Moss reports him to be in high spirits

hope all is well for Sir Moss.

Top 5 Ways Not to Be Annoying on Twitter

To master the fine art of friending followers, here are five ways to not be annoying.

  1. Don’t hide. Include extra contact info in your Twitter bio or background. Sometimes, 140 characters isn’t enough for your audience to say what they want. To encourage further dialog, and limit your customers’ searching frustration, include your website URL, email address, and telephone number (if appropriate) within your Twitter page.
  2. Don’t ignore. Answer all replies or questions within a reasonable timeframe. If a customer called you up on the phone, it’s unlikely that you’d sit on the call in silence. When you’re participating online, the same rules apply. While it might be time consuming to respond on a regular basis, your social media success depends on your accessibility and ability to engage in conversation. In other words, grab a cup or two of coffee every morning or night, and answer away. Your followers will commend your commitment, and they’ll respect that you’re listening.
  3. Don’t yell. As much as you want to promote your business, limit direct marketing messages about how great your business is or why someone needs your product now. It’s OK to sell on Twitter, but for some users they prefer a soft sell or a message that has some real value to them (such as a product discount). To get some examples of how businesses effectively use the micro-blogging site, seek out some of the top companies on Twitter, such as @Zappos and @Starbucks, and learn from them.
  4. Don’t disappear. Consistency is the key to your business’s online marketing success. Just like going to the gym, regular activity leads to results (and the good news is that you don’t have to break a sweat on Twitter, unless you’re tweeting on the treadmill, which I’ve been known to do). There are few things more frustrating than a company that is online for a few days in a row, and then disappears for a few days at a time. Think of Twitter as a series of marathons, not a quick sprint to the finish line.
  5. Don’t lie. While it might be tempting to write a clever marketing tease that leads to an online promotion, try to be as direct as possible when messaging. For example, if you try to entice people with tweets, such as this link leads to the “the funniest video ever” or the “cheapest product you’ll ever find,” you should be certain that their expectations are met. If you send your followers astray too many times, they will stop believing what you have to say. Since trust is a must-have quality on the web, always tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

Canon EOS 550D Announced

Final Cut used on 9 out of 10 Oscar documentaries | Video | Creative Notes | Macworld

When you talk about the Oscars and a Steve Jobs-led company, it’s usually the other one that gets the mention. But this year, Apple scored some Oscar cred of its own: Of the ten documentaries nominated for Oscars, in both the “Documentary Feature” and “Documentary Short” categories, a whopping nine were created using Apple’s own Final Cut Pro.

Apple’s PR rep put it this way: “This year’s Academy Award nominations demonstrate that the best documentary filmmakers in the world are using Apple.” According to the “2010 SCRI Report for Non-Linear Video Editors”—a scintillating sounding report if ever there were one—Final Cut Pro captures half of the professional video editing software market.

If you think Apple’s 90 percent showing in the Oscar documentary categories is impressive, you’ll be even more awed to learn that the one holdout that didn’t use Final Cut Pro was actually edited entirely on an iPhone 3GS. (Of course, you’ll be decidedly less awed to learn that I just made that up—the long-form documentary “Burma VJ” actually used an Avid video-editing system, which is a bit more advanced than an iPhone.)

With the Documentary Short category entirely made up of Final Cut-created docs, one Oscar with the Apple touch is a given. As for the Documentary Feature, the Final Cut-edited “The Cove” is considered the favorite. Take that, “Burma VJ.”
